Choline is een belangrijke component bij de opbouw van fosfolipide celmembranen; daarom kunnen snel vermenigvuldigende cellen een hoge choline-opname tot expressie brengen. Deze eigenschap wordt gebruikt in verschillende PET-onderzoeken met (<sup>18<\/sup>F) fluormethylcholine voor de detectie en differenti\u00eble diagnose van prostaatkanker, borstcarcinoom,
